Meet Meagan

A studio built on warmth, humor, and meaningful human connection — where students have fun and build real confidence.

I began playing the piano at the age of 9 and immediately knew it was “my thing”. Instead of going out to recess, I would practice in the music room and spend time with the music teacher. I decided I was going to be a professional pianist by the time I was 11.

In high school, I took advantage of every musical opportunity; I accompanied three choirs, taught myself to play the saxophone, sang, played at churches, joined the New Hampshire Youth Wind Symphony, and accompanied musicals. I went on to attend the University of New Hampshire where I devoured each one of my music classes. In 1993, I began teaching at the Bell Center for Music and Arts in Dover, New Hampshire, and quickly found myself with a full schedule. I graduated in 1995, Magna Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education. I remained at the Bell Center for ten years and also joined the faculty at Berwick Academy in South Berwick, Maine. I then started my independent studio in my home in 2000.

I am a member of Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and earned my title of Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM) in 2012. I'm a member of NHMTA and Seacoast NHMTA, the local chapters of MTNA. I served as the NHMTA Evaluations Chairperson for fifteen years and was the President of Seacoast NHMTA for six years. I had the honor of being chosen 2012 NHMTA Teacher of the Year and was recognized by former Governor John Lynch for excellence in teaching. For ten years, I was the pianist and organist at the Newmarket Community Church.

I live in Newfields, NH, with my amazing husband Vasu, two wonderful, young adult children, Jai and Anjali, and two charismatic and energetic Goldendoodles, Rosie and Toby.

Lesson Information

Everything you need to get started.

Clear, simple details on lesson length, scheduling, cost, and expectations — so you can focus on what matters: having fun, building confidence, and exploring music together.

Length

Private lessons are 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes depending on age, motivation, and playing level. Beginners usually have 30 minute lessons but may choose a 45 minute lesson for more accelerated learning.

Schedule

Between September and May, lessons occur every week during the same time slot. June, July, and August are optional — families choose which days and times work for their summer plans. No lessons on most federal holidays and school vacations.

Cost

  • 30 minute lesson$45
  • 45 minute lesson$67.50
  • 60 minute lesson$90
  • 90 minute lesson$135

Payment

Invoices for the upcoming month are sent via email before the 1st. I accept cash, check, PayPal, and Venmo — a PayPal link is included on the digital invoice. A reminder email is sent if payment isn't received by the 5th. Summer payment is due when lessons are scheduled.

Books, sheet music, and recital or festival fees are added to the next invoice.

What You'll Need

A piano or approved keyboard at home to practice on. A good quality instrument has 72–88 weighted keys, at least one pedal, touch-sensitive dynamics, a music rack, and an adjustable stand or bench. Acoustic pianos are preferred — I'm happy to help you choose one.

Materials

I'll provide uniquely chosen music at the first lesson. Please bring any music you already have for me to consider, plus a small notebook for assignments and a 3-ring binder for organizing printed music.

Practice

I expect students to practice at home every week — playing bits of pieces over and over to become more proficient. A little practice each day is better than a lot of time on one day; please aim for five practice days each week. A set, regular practice time is invaluable. I motivate with practice challenges and games to encourage progress, and ask families to provide a quiet, comfortable, well-lit, temperature-controlled space.

Attendance

Students are expected to attend their weekly scheduled lessons. Please text as soon as possible if a student is sick or needs to miss. With an hour's notice, lessons can move online; inclement-weather lessons are held online as well. You may also FaceTime, swap with another family, or send a video. Lessons begin and end on time. If discontinuing, please give one month's notice.

Fingernails & Tuning

Fingernails must be kept short to enable good playing technique. Acoustic pianos should be tuned at least once a year to keep them sounding their best — and to make practicing genuinely enjoyable.

I'm looking forward to meeting you and working with you!

Questions

Good to know.

I teach all ages and levels and have worked with students between the ages of 5 and 75. To begin lessons, a young student must be able to read the letters A B C D E F G and the numbers 1 2 3 4 5; age six or seven is usually a good age. Occasionally, I will start a younger student who is an early reader and is able to stay engaged for a whole lesson. Adults simply need to have a good attitude and a sense of humor. It's true, "It's never too late to start".

Yes — private lessons are the heart of the studio. Every student gets fully personalized instruction tailored to their age, goals, and playing level, so they can have fun, build confidence, and explore at their own pace. Ensemble programs are an optional add-on for students who want to share meaningful experiences with others alongside their private lessons.

Kids ages 5 and up, teens, and adults. I don't take students under 5, but from there the studio is intentionally multi-generational — everyone has a place to explore, build confidence, and have fun together.

My studio is at 42 Hall's Mill Road, Newfields, NH 03856 — a warm, light-filled space in the New Hampshire Seacoast designed for both private lessons and group ensembles where students can explore and connect.

Yes — relaxed, joyful community performances throughout the year focused on having fun, building confidence, and celebrating progress together. They feel more like gatherings than recitals.
